1. Philippine History

  • Pre-Colonial: Barangay system, Datu rule, animism.
  • Spanish Period (1521-1898):
    • Magellan's Arrival: March 16, 1521.
    • Battle of Mactan: April 27, 1521 (Lapu-Lapu vs. Magellan).
    • Legazpi: Established first settlement in Cebu (1565) and Manila (1571).
    • Galleon Trade: Trade between Manila and Acapulco, Mexico.
    • Gomburza: Martyred priests (1872), sparked nationalism.
    • K.K.K.: Founded by Andres Bonifacio (1892).
    • Rizal's Execution: December 30, 1896.
    • Declaration of Independence: June 12, 1898 (Kawit, Cavite, by Aguinaldo).
  • American Period (1898-1946):
    • Public education system (Thomasites).
    • Commonwealth Government (Manuel L. Quezon).
  • Japanese Period (1941-1945): "Puppet Republic".
  • Post-War/Third Republic: Independence from US (July 4, 1946).
  • Martial Law: Declared by Marcos (Sept 21, 1972).
  • EDSA Revolution: Feb 22-25, 1986. Corazon Aquino becomes president.

2. The 1987 Philippine Constitution

  • Article I: National Territory.
  • Article II: Declaration of Principles and State Policies.
  • Article III: Bill of Rights (Due process, free speech, etc.).
  • Article IV: Citizenship.
  • Article V: Suffrage (Right to vote).
  • Article VI: Legislative (Congress - Senate & House of Reps).
  • Article VII: Executive (President & VP).
  • Article VIII: Judicial (Supreme Court).

3. Economics

  • Economics: Study of efficient allocation of scarce resources.
  • Law of Supply and Demand:
    • High Demand + Low Supply = High Price.
    • Low Demand + High Supply = Low Price.
  • GDP (Gross Domestic Product): Total value of goods/services produced within the country.
  • GNP (Gross National Product): Total value produced by citizens (including OFWs).
  • Inflation: General increase in prices.
  • Taxation: Lifeblood of the government.

4. Rizal and Other Heroes

  • Jose Rizal: National Hero. Born June 19, 1861 in Calamba. Wrote Noli and El Fili to expose Spanish abuses.
  • Andres Bonifacio: The Great Plebeian. Father of the Revolution.
  • Apolinario Mabini: Brains of the Katipunan. Sublime Paralytic.
  • Emilio Jacinto: Brains of the Revolution.
  • Juan Luna: Painter (Spoliarium).
